* According to legend, Shen Nong (the Divine Farmer) was born in China over 5,400 years ago.  Legend has it that he introduced agriculture to his people and in so doing became enchanted by the medicinal properties of various plants.  He is said to have tested 70 substances in one day to determine there efficacy.  While Shen Nong himself may never have existed, he is credited with authorship of the first material medica, the Shen Nong Cao (divine Farmer’s Materia Medica) which lists 365 substances (plants, minerals, and animal parts) and categorizes them according to superior (substances for immortality), medium (substances for maintaining health), and inferior (substances for treating diseases).  Shen Nong’s legendary role as the founder of Chinese herbal medicine led to his being deified by the Daoists.  To this day, in many Asian countries and China towns around the world, there is a day set aside to memorialize the achievement of Shen Nong.  In keeping with the legend of Shen Nong, the Shen Nong herb award recognizes the MSAOM student who has excelled in the study and practice of Chinese Herbs.
